Mentorship Program

The Purpose

The Women in Space Sweden Mentorship Program aims to empower and support women pursuing studies or careers in the space industry by fostering meaningful mentorship relationships. The program will provide guidance, networking opportunities, and professional development to help mentees advance in their careers. Mentors are an important part of encouraging women and girls to pursue education and careers in the space industry and are also role models to learn from and gain support. By implementing this mentorship program, Women in Space Sweden aims to create a supportive community that empowers and advances women in the space industry.

This program includes the following categories
  • Education: for you who seek guidance on study choices or wish to further your education in STEAM
  • Entrepreneurship: for you who envision to join or build your own start-up
  • Early career: for you who are  interested in transitioning into the industry or grow your career in space
  • Leadership: for you who aim to transition to leadership roles within the space industry

Who can apply?

The program is dedicated to any persons identifying as women and girls as well as any persons identifying as non-binary, age 13 and above and based in Sweden. Mentee candidates must complete the online application and indicate their interest area.  The program welcome industry leaders and professionals, based in Sweden or internationally, to apply and mentors will be selected to represent a variety of fields and geographical regions.

How to Apply

Program Structure

  • Program duration: The mentorship program will run for 10 months, allowing sufficient time for mentees and mentors to build a strong and supportive relationship.
  • Recruitment of mentors: Industry leaders and professionals are welcome to apply and mentors will be selected to represent a variety of fields and geographical regions. Mentors can be based worldwide.
  • Recruitment of mentees: The program welcomes individuals from diverse backgrounds, experience, and expertise to apply, selecting from the four focus areas. Mentees must be minimum 13 years old and based in Sweden.
  • Education: for you who seek guidance on study choices or wish to further your education in STEAM
  • Entrepreneurship: for you who envision to join or build your own start-up
  • Early career: for you who are  interested in transitioning into the industry or grow your career in space
  • Leadership: for you who aim to transition to leadership roles within the space industry
  • Match-making: The program crew will conduct interviews to match mentees with suitable mentors based on their goals, interests, and career aspirations, to the extent possible.
  • Orientation Session: The program will kick-off with an orientation session to introduce mentors and mentees and provide guidelines, expectations, and communication channels.

  • Webinars will be arranged during the program, on relevant topics, for ex leadership skills, technical knowledge, industry trends.
  • Mentors are encouraged to join and to share their experiences and insights in these webinars.
  • Facilitate and encourage networking
  • Participation in industry events for mentees to build and expand their network.
  • Feedback and improvement: Regularly collect feedback from mentors and mentees to assess and improve the program.
  • Celebration and recognition: Acknowledge achievements and milestones of mentees. Highlight success stories to inspire and motivate other women in the space industry.
The mentor will coach and help mentees to grow their skills and gain new perspectives on their studies and/or career. The mentor will;
  1. Commit to actively engage with the program over 10 months
  2. Collaboratively set clear short-term and long-term goals with the mentee
  3. Engage in regular one-on-one meetings with the mentee (1hr/month if possible)
  4. Provide guidance, share insights, experiences, contacts and feedback to help the mentee overcome challenges, enhance skills and achieve their goals
  5. Act as a role model for the mentee and as an advocate for mentee in the industry
  6. Offer encouragement and support to try new things
  7. Be responsive to communication from the mentee in a timely manner
  8. Foster an inclusive and respectful mentorship environment, valuing diversity and different perspectives
  9. Maintain confidentiality regarding the mentee’s personal and professional information shared during the mentorship relationship
  10. At the end of the program, provide a brief word of reference for the mentee and participate in evaluations to assess the effectiveness of the program
Both mentors and mentees will also need to sign the Code of Conduct before starting the program, and mentors also commit to contacting their mentee within one week of matching to set up first meeting.
Mentees will discuss their academic and/or professional aspirations and concerns with mentors to give guidance and support. Mentors will not have all the answers or know exactly what to do, but will guide mentees to learn and gain new perspectives. The mentees will;
  1. Commit to actively engage with the program and mentor over 10 months (please provide parent consent if under 18 year old)
  2. Plan, schedule and prepare for regular meetings with the mentor
  3. Identify challenges, skills, knowledge and or goals that they want to overcome or achieve and communicate to their mentor
  4. Collaboratively set clear short-term and long-term goals with the mentor
  5. Have a positive attitude and be ready to learn and or take action
  6. Work with mentors to seek resources for learning, identify people or valuable info
  7. Be respective of the mentors time and responsive to communication
  8. Put the mentors feedback into practise throughout the process
  9. Let the program staff know if you are having any difficulties communicating with mentor
  10. Provide feedback and participate end-of-program evaluations to assess the effectiveness of the program
